Abstract

480,514. Cooling pistons. BLACHE, H. H., and REBBECK, F. E. Aug. 14, 1937, No. 22368. [Class 122 (i)] In an internal-combustion engine having an oil-cooled single-acting piston articulated by means of a cylindrical gudgeon pin to a connecting-rod, the whole of the stream of 'oil used for cooling the piston also passes through the gudgeon pin and through lubrication grooves between the gudgeon pin and its bearing bush as a continuous single uniflow current from and to supply and return passages in the connecting rod. As shown, oil passes from a bore 34 in the crankshaft through ducts 36, 37, to a central tube 32 in the connecting rod, and thence to the piston cooling space 8 by way of passages 21, 24 in the hollow gudgeon pin 12 and a duct 16 in the piston. The oil returns to an annular space 31 in the connecting rod through a duct 17, passages 25, 26, in the gudgeon pin, and grooves 27 in the bearing surface of the gudgeon pin bush 11. From the space 31 the oil is discharged to the crank-case either by way of a pipe 39 or by way of ducts 40, 41, in the big end of the connecting-rod. In a modification, the gudgeon pin is fixed to a slipper carried by the piston.
