Abstract

A cylinder (9) has lubrication grooves (14-15; 22) formed in the wall thereof and to induce lubricant to flow along the full length of the grooves, lubricant from supply pipes (1) is fed into the grooves via supply bores (16, 17), which extend substantially in line with respective grooves or sections (14, 15) thereof. The arrangement is particularly applicable to 2-stroke engines, and the lubricant may pass to bores (16, 17) via a check valve (3, 4) and a reservoir (18) which also communicates with the cylinder via a passage (24) so that lubricant can be displaced from the reservoir by the pressure within the cylinder between the piston rings on the power stroke. <IMAGE>
