Abstract

1359300 Scavenging I C engines B HOOPER and J E FAVILL 13 Sept 1971 [19 Sept 1970] 44749/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A two-stroke I.C. engine which may be used with its crank-shaft vertical supplies a compressed charge of air, lubricant and fuel from a crank chamber 29 to the cylinder via a first transfer passage 28 in a crank-shaft 17 and a second transfer passage 33 which communicates with the passage 28 at a location at or adjacent one only of the crank-shaft journal bearings 32, the second transfer passage 33 comprising a branched passage leading to inlet ports 50, 53 in the cylinder wall, the branched passage and the inlet ports giving, in conjunction with the exhaust ports 55, loop scavenging of the cylinder. The fresh charge passes from the inlet ports 50, 53 towards the wall opposite the exhaust ports 55 and is deflected by the wall towards the cylinder head which deflects the fresh charge to expel the spent charge from the exhaust ports. Lubrication of bearing 15 is by oil passing through conduit 28b from groove 28a and by oil running down surface 32 from opening 30 through which the mixture passes. (For Figure(s) see next page)
