Abstract
858,593. Engine construction ; lubricating; cooling cylinders. ENGINEERING RESEARCH & APPLICATION Ltd. April 1, 1959 [April 8, 1958], No. 11022/58. Class 7(2). A housing which provides the cylinders and crank-case comprises a plurality of cast parts having engaging faces lying in the plane of the cylinder and crank-shaft main bearing axes, in which faces oil grooves are formed extending along the crank-case and feeding subsidiary channels in communication with the crankshaft bearings. Figs. la, 1b, 1c are a view of the inside of casting 11 which engages casting 10, Fig. 2, on faces 18 to 27 lying in the plane 12. The cavities 13, 14, 15, 16 are for the cylinders, 32 the cranks, 33 the flywheel and 35 for a pump and crank-shaft drive which can be attached to a bracket 37. The faces 20, 21, 22 have formed therein gear-box layshaft bearings 39, 40, 41 and faces 20 to 27 have bearings 44 to 49 for the crank-shaft and gear-box main bearings. The oil grooves 50, 51 forming the main oil channel 52 receive oil through an opening 54 from an oil filter blow off port. An opening 56 delivers oil from the pump into the subsidiary channel 55 which has an opening 57 communicating with a relief valve and an opening 58 leading via the oil filter intake and outlet to the opening 53. The channel 52 is fed from the opening 53 and is connected by a groove 60 to the bearing 44 which is connected to bearing 39 by a groove 61, the remaining bearings being fed by grooves, ducts or pipes from the channel 52 in a similar manner. The channel 174 leads to lubrication passages in the cylinder head and is connected by a duct 172 with grooves 173 which are closed by cylinder liners 179 to form cooling channels. A groove 72 for a resilient packing strip is fitted on the outer side of the oil channels. Specifications 858,594 and 858,595 are referred to.
