Abstract

1365192 I C engine crank-cases MOTOREN-UND TURBINEN-UNION FRIEDRICHSHAFEN GmbH 6 Jan 1972 [9 Jan 1971] 639/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] The two similar crank-cases 11, 11' of a horizontally-opposed cylinder engine with two similar engine units one above the other each comprises a plurality of welded together cast sections 15 having transverse walls 13 accommodating crank-shaft bearings 16, 16' and Y bifurcations 14 diverging towards the other engine unit. The crank-cases 11, 11' are connected by flanges 12, 12' and the crank-case sides 20, 20' remote from the flanges have access openings for crank-shaft installation. Recesses 17, 17' in the flanged sides of the units extend the entire length of the engine and form a collection conduit for lubricant from the upper crank-case 11. The crank-case access openings are closed by components 22, 22' having the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the walls 13 and engaging the crank-case at serrated areas. On either side of the bearing 16, 16' the walls 13 are formed with bosses 25, 25', 26, 26' symmetrically above and below the cylinder axes plane. The bores 29, 29', 30, 30' in the bosses communicate with coolant supply pipes 28 and the upper bores 29, 30' contain nozzles 31 for directing piston coolant. Each crank-shaft 21, 21' is formed in two parts 33, 34 joined by a coupling 36.
