Abstract

548,270. Charge, cooling. SHELLEY, T. March 31, 1941, No. 4318. [Class 7 (ii)] In a supercharged aircraft or other engine, the supercharger delivers combustion air to a trunk conduit 10 having branches 11 leading to the engine cylinders and each branch is provided with an air cooler through which liquid is circulated to and from a radiator. As shown, the induction system is arranged to fit into the space between the cylinder blocks of a V engine and each branch 11 is fitted with an air-cooler casing 12 and induction manifolds 15, 16 for the two cylinder blocks. An air-cooler in each casing 12 extends into the branch 11. Each cooler comprises headers 17, 18 connected by plates 19 to form a box open at top and bottom and the headers communicate through flattened tubes 20, 21 each divided by a corrugated strip into a number of narrow passages. The tubes are threaded through slots in thin plates 41 and a baffle 42 is provided. Liquid is circulated through the tubes from an air-cooled radiator through the sections 29 of a main flow pipe, branches 33 and pipes 27 to the upper parts of the headers 17, and from the lower parts of the headers 17 through pipes 25 and the sections 291 of a return main to the radiator.
