Abstract

451,293. Tubular heat - exchangers ; internal-combustion engines. ROBERTSON, J. R., 1, Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, London. March 13, 1935, No. 7805. [Class 64 (iii)] [See also Group XXVII]. The air or mixture supplied to the cylinders of a superchargedradial-cylinder internal - combustion engine for an aircraft &c. is cooled by passage through the tubes of air-cooled heat-exchangers a, Fig. 6, secured at one end to the supercharger casing m and at the other to manifolds o connected to the induction ports of the cylinders. The heat-exchangers are constructed of aluminium, magnesium, &c. and each comprise tubes of oval or streamlined cross-section having cylindrical ends secured by ferrules in polygonal-shaped tube-plates in the manner described in Specification 450,984, [Group XXVIII]. The tube-plate secured to the supercharger casing is formed with a rim k, Fig. 1, enclosing the circular ends of the ferrules which are flush with the rim. In a modification, the rim is dispensed with and the flush surface is formed by interlocking hexagonal heads on the ferrules. The heatexchangers may be formed with sections a, a<1>, Fig. 7, connected to adjacent cylinders.
