Abstract
539,934. Cooling aero-engines. ATTESLANDER, E. Jan. 26, 1940, No. 1667. [Class 7 (ii)] An air-cooled aero-engine having rows of cylinders arranged in V or combinations of V- formation with the crankshaft disposed towards the middle of a profiled section such as a wing or fuselage, has its cylinders extending to the outer covering of the profiled section, its inlet ports being disposed towards the sides adjacent to said outer covering and to exhaust ports within the V. In one form an engine with its cylinders in V-formation is arranged transversely on its side within a cowling B arranged on the front of a main plane, front and rear openings, being formed for the passage of cooling air which encounters the exhaust side of the cylinder heads first and is screened from the cooler inlet side by the camshaft casings and inlet manifolds. Cooling fins N, N<1> are provided on the cylinder heads. Deflectors which contain the exhaust pipes, ensure a uniform distribution of the propeller blast over the cylinders. The stroke-bore ratio is relatively large e.g. 1.4. Where a sleeve valve engine is used each cylinder head is formed externally as a cup-shaped member having cooling fins over which the air is directed by a funnel shaped member F, Fig. 2. The inlet port J is formed in the cylinder wall on the side of the cylinder away from the incoming air and the exhaust port E on the opposite side, the two ports being controlled by a sleeve valve T.
