Abstract
547,406. Cooling cylinders and exhaust. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and THOMAS, F. M. Jan. 17, 1941, No. 705. [Class 7 (ii)] In an air-cooled engine installation, the cold air for cooling the engine, the air which has become heated in cooling the engine and the exhaust gases are so disposed in ducts 15, 25, 24, that the cold air and the exhaust gases are separated by the heated air. As shown, the installation comprises radial-cylinder engines 10 which are arranged coaxially face-to-face in a casing 17 in the fuselage of an aircraft and drive airscrews through laterally extending shafts 13. Air is admitted through the ducts 15 in the wings to a space 12 between the engines, and is deflected by tubular partitions 19 over the cylinder heads and barrels as described in Specification 547,404. The heated air then passes around exhaust rings 22 and the tailpipes 24 to outlets 28 at the rear of the wings. Oil coolers 26 may be arranged in ducts 27 branched. from the air ducts 15 and leading to the outlet duct 25. Specifications 546,630, [Group XXXIII], 547,403 and 547,405 also are referred to.
