Abstract
547,405. Aircraft engines. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and THOMAS, F. M. Jan 17, 1941, No. 704. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Two aircraft engines 10 are spaced apart to provide between them a chamber 12 in which ducts 15 for the exhaust gases are located and with which ducts 19, 25 for the supply and discharge of cooling and charging air communicate. As shown, the engines are disposed coaxially face-to-face in a closed chamber connected at the sides to the supply ducts 19. The air admitted through inlets 18 and the ducts 19 is divided into two streams for each engine, one stream passing through a duct to the carburetter and the other passing around a partition 24, as described in Specification 547,404, to cool the engine. The outlet for the heated air is through ducts 25 surrounding the exhaust tailpipes 16, as described in Specification 547,406. Oil coolers 26 may be located in air ducts 27 branched from the inlets 18 and leading to the ducts 25. In the case of liquid-cooled engines, radiators for cooling the liquid may be situated in the air chamber 12. The engines are coupled through gearing 28 to shafts 13 transmitting a drive to airscrews disposed on the wings 14 ; alternatively the engines may be arranged as described in Specification 547,426, with their axis lengthwise of the wing.
