Abstract

468,064. Spray carburetters. ELLOR, J. E. Nov. 26, 1935, No. 32746. [Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] The air intake of a carburetter for an aircraft engine is provided with means for substituting in various proportions for a supply of cold air from the external air stream, heated air from the interior of a radiator tunnel. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, cooling-air passing through a tunnel B containing a liquid cooling radiator A or a vapour condenser, is discharged around a streamlined member D through which the air intake pipe C of a carburetter passes. Normally, cold air is drawn into the pipe C through an opening C<2> below the tunnel, but when a valve G is opened by hand or by a thermally sensitive device, air, heated by the radiator, passes through a slot F into the member D and enters the pipe C. A flap G<3> admits warm air, when desired, from the member D into the cockpit. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the proportions of hot air, drawn through a branch H<2> opening into the radiator tunnel B, and cold air, drawn from branches H<3>, and supplied to two carburetters, are controlled by valves J. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the cold air is supplied through a pipe K which passes through the radiator A, while the hot air is admitted behind the radiator when flaps K<2> are opened. The exit of the cooling-air from the tunnel is controlled by a flap L. Vanes M help the flow of air in the intake pipe through a right-angle.
