Abstract
722,913. Cooling systems for I.C. engines; temperature - responsive actuating- elements. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. Dec. 11, 1952. [Dec. 13, 1951] No. 29210/51. Classes 64 (2) and 64 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] A thermally-controlled valve 4 in a liquid flow system such as an I.C. engine cooling system and which closes against a seat 5 below a certain temperature (the operating temperature), has a passage 6 through it controlled by an auxiliary thermally-operated valve 7 so that the passage is open below a further temperature itself below the operating temperature and is closed above the further temperature. The auxiliary valve 7 is a bimetal annulus secured by rivets 8 at one side thereof. Liquid enters a port 9 in a housing 1 containing an air-filled bellows 2 which controls the main valve 4. When filling the system with cold liquid, the valve 7 permits the escape of air across the closed valve 4 but is closed at normal temperatures of the system.
