Abstract

736,711. Valves. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. May 14, 1954 [Feb. 18, 1953], No; 4578/53. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] A thermostaticallycontrolled valve for incorporation in a liquid flow system such as the cooling system of an internal-combustion engine has associated therewith a bypass passage which is adapted to permit the flow of air when the valve is closed and which is closed by the action of a float member when the valve is surrounded by liquid. This arrangement enables air to escape whilst the system is being filled. with liquid and obviates any leak across the valve when the system is full. As shown, the by-pass passage is formed in the valve closure member and comprises ports 9 in a frusto-conical head portion 8 and a central hole 11 in a cylindrical portion 10 attached to the head portion. The hole 11 is closed by a conical part 14 on a cork float 12 weighted by a part 13. The float 12 and the part 13 are of square section and are guided in the cylindrical portion 10. The valve head 8 co-operates with a seat 3 on a housing 1 adapted to be inserted in a part of the cooling system. The housing has flow ports 5 and carries at its lower end a liquid-filled bellows 6 connected to the valve head 8 by a stem 7.
