Abstract

814,986. Valves. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. May 20, 1957 [June 20, 1956], No. 19161/56. Class 135. A flow control valve, e.g. for providing wide range control of bleeds in aircraft fuel systems, comprises a half ball obturating member 13 of which the flat diametral face seats on a flat seating face at one end of a control orifice 12 between inlet 17 and outlet 19 in a housing 10, the half ball being mounted in a concave seating in a movable member 15, the movements of which control the valve opening, and a neeedl valve member 24 of variable cross-section which passes through the valve orifice and is arranged to move with the half ball but is not positively connected thereto. The needle member may be arranged to exercise control over the flow rate not only within the effective range of movement of the half ball but also beyond this range. The flow characteristics of the device may be partly determined by a fixed restrictor orifice 21 placed between the inlet and the control orifice. In a modification, the restrictor orifice is omitted, and the needle member is biased towards the half ball by a spring.
