In a relief valve having an inlet 7 and an outlet 8 and biased to its closed position by a spring 3, a damping device comprises a plunger 10 connected by a stem 9 to the valve poppet 4 and slidable in a damping chamber 12 having a restricted flow passage 13 open to the inlet connection via a passage 15, so that liquid is drawn into the chamber when the valve opens and is discharged through the passage 13 as the valve closes, thereby damping the rate of return of the valve. An unrestricted supply passage to the chamber 12 may be provided, having a non-return valve to close the passage when the valve is moving to its closed position.
