A valve for controlling fluid flow comprises a chamber 3 through which fluid can flow between an inlet 6 and an outlet 2, a sealing member 1 movable to and away from the outlet to close and open the outlet, a freely slidable member 4, formed to close the chamber inlet, housed in the chamber and movable therein by the sealing member towards the chamber inlet as the sealing member is moved towards the chamber outlet, the slide reaching and closing the chamber inlet just before the sealing member reaches and closes the chamber outlet, the slide member being formed with a reduced passage 7, 8 through which fluid can pass at a reduced rate when the slide closes the chamber inlet and until, as a result of further movement, the sealing member closes the chamber outlet. As shown applied to a valve in which the sealing member 1, in the form of a washer, is mounted in a sleeve rotatable through gears, as more fully described in Specification 887,558, the member 4 is of generally square section having a reduced portion 5 arranged to be pressed by the sealing member via a pin 9 into the inlet 6 when the valve is being closed;. when applied to a ball-operated valve the pin 9 may be formed with or fitted rigidly to the carrier of the sealing member 1 and bear against the flat base of the carrier or a yieldable pad secured to the base. The reduced passage 7, 8 is provided in order to prevent water hammer. A cone 10 on the plug mates with a seat 11 in order to close the outlet when the closure member 1 is being replaced.
