Abstract

1,029,624. Valves. W. D. LUDWIG. Feb.19, 1963 [Feb. 5, 1962], No. 6694/63. Heading F2V. Apparatus for controlling the flow of pressurized fluid comprises a body with ports 15, 16 connected by a passageway 11, 12, a valve 23 engaged by means 24 for normally maintaining the valve in the closed position, a chamber 26 in the body having a piston 50 for opening the valve, and fluid metering means 73 for admitting fluid to the chamber to operate the piston 50 after a predetermined time delay. The piston 50 and the valve 23 are slidably mounted on a tube 18 containing a passage 60a leading to the chamber 26 from the metering means 73 which consists of a V-shaped slot having its effective length controlled by a member 74 on a spring- loaded cap 78 in screw-threaded engagement with the tube. The slot 73 is connected by a passage 65 to a valve 72 and filter 69 while a similar valve 49 is provided in a duct 41 connecting the chamber 26 with a vent 46. When fluid enters the port 15 and the passage 11, it displaces the valve 72 to the left to open the passage 65 and flows at a rate determined by the setting of the cap 78 into the chamber 26. When the pressure in the latter has reached a predetermined value the piston 50 lifts the valve 23 from its seat against the resistance of a spring 24. In its lowermost position the piston rests on projections 32, 33 which are uncovered as soon as upward movement has begun to increase the differential area of the piston in a 2: 1 ratio and give a snap action. Reverse flow through the apparatus closes valve 72 and permits fluid in chamber 26 to escape by opening the valve 49. The piston 50 then falls to its lowermost position and the valve 23 is held open by the flow through passages 12, 11.
