Abstract

1401613 Valves SIEBE GORMAN & CO Ltd 5 July 1972 [5 July 1971] 31500/71 Heading F2V [Also in Division A5] A valve for controlling the supply of respirable gas to a face mask is operated by a diaphragm 6 responsive to the difference between ambient pressure and the pressure on the downstream side of the valve and is closed against the action of resilient means 28 when the pressure difference exceeds a predetermined amount. Gas is supplied to the valve through a banjo fitting 23 and passages 16, 17, 18 terminating in a seat 19 engaged by a rubber portion 21 on the valve member 20 which is of generally cylindrical shape with three plane side faces to form passageways. A ball 22 secured to the valve member by caulking with a ring punch engages a spring-loaded lever 37 operated by the diaphragm through a screw 39 which may be adjusted to alter the position of the arm at which the valve closes. A second screw 31 limits rightward movement of the diaphragm. Two centrally anchored rubber flaps (43, 44, Fig. 2) arranged in series mounted in a plastic sheath closed by a perforated metal dome (50) allow exhaled gas to flow to atmosphere or to a CO 2 absorber for recirculation to the user. Only one rubber flap may be used. A knob 34 may be unscrewed to engage the head of the screw 31 when the valve is to be held shut.
