Abstract
1382404 Respiratory appliances ROBERTSHAW CONTROLS CO 26 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 14368/73 Heading A5T [Also in Division G3] A demand valve for use with breathing or resuscitation equipment comprises a valve 104 to control a gas flow to an outlet passage 114, a valve 124 to vent an exhaust flow from the user to atmosphere, a pilot valve 30 controlling pressure on one side of the valve 104, a diaphragm 42 sensing pressure in the outlet passage 114 for moving the pilot valve between open and closed positions, and a manually actuated button 54 for moving the pilot valve to its open position. The diaphragm 42 'forms one side of a chamber 12 connected by a passage 18 to the outlet 114 which also communicates through arcuate apertures (not shown) with an annular space 88 inside a casing 84 for the valve 104. When the pilot valve is closed, pressure from an oxygen or air mixture supply connected to a radial inlet (not shown) acts through passages 74, 76 on the left hand side of the valve 104 and also through passages 78, 86 and 94 on the right hand side of the valve. When the pilot valve is opened either by the button 54 or by the diaphragm 42, the right hand side of the valve 104 is connected through the passages 94, 16, the space 12 and the passage 18 with the outlet 114 so that the valve 104 is lifted by supply pressure to allow oxygen or air mixture to flow into the outlet through a pair of flap valves (not shown). The outlet 114 may be connected to a face mask and the diaphragm may be displaced to open the pilot valve each time the user inhales. Exhalation raises the pressure in the outlet to close the flap valves and lift the valve 124 from its seat 116 so that the outlet is connected to a vent 118. To prevent the pilot valve being held open by the button 54 during exhalation, the diaphragm 42 is displaced by exhalation pressure against a second spring-loaded button 56.
