Abstract
679,279. Filling tanks. PARKER APPLIANCE CO. May 16, 1950. No. 12141/50. Class 21. [Also in Group XXIX] A device for controlling the inlet to a fuel tank 10, Fig. 1, comprises an inlet valve 11 controlled by a float-operated pilot valve 12. The valve 11 comprises an inlet 18, Fig. 2, closed by a removable cap 42, an annular groove 19 with outlets 20 to the tank, and a closure member 29 controlling communication between the inlet 18 and the groove 19. The closure member is spring-urged to the closed position, and has orifices 33, 34, controlled by ball valves 37, 38 respectively. The pilot valve comprises a closure member 58, Fig. 5, controlling the outlet 57 of a pipe 13 connected to a chamber 41 above the member 29, and a float 62 supported in a cage 60 for actuating the member 58. To fill the tank, the cap 42 is replaced by a fuelling nozzle and fuel under pressure lifts the member 29 off its seat. Some of the fuel passes through the orifice 33 and pipe 13 and escapes into the tank through the open outlet 57. When the tank is full, the float rises and closes the outlet 57, whereby the pressures on opposite sides of the member 29 balance and the spring seats the member. The pressures due to the heads of fuel in the pipe 13 and in the tank also help to hold the valve closed, the tank having access to the chamber 41 through the orifice 34.
