Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A cooling system for a vehicle engine 1 comprises a distributer 5 having an inlet 12, an outlet 13 connected to a heating radiator 4, an outlet 15 connected to a minor portion 8 of the main radiator 3, an outlet 17 connected to the major portion 9 of radiator 3, and a temperature-responsive member 21 (Fig. 2) for controlling the flow of coolant to outlets 15 and 17. As shown in Fig. 2 one end of member 21 is secured to the stem 22 of a first valve 23 and stem 22 is aligned with and spaced from the stem 34 of a second valve 35 which is thus opened only when valve 23 has been opened by a predetermined amount. The supply of coolant to heater 4 is controlled by a diaphragm valve 27, which is manually adjusted by a lever 30 and is connected via rod 26 to the other end of member 21. Operation of valve 27 thus changes the loading on member 21 and hence the temperatures at which valves 23 and 35 are opened. Valve 23 has a permanently open bleed passage 23a therethrough.
