Abstract

947,736. Cooling systems for internal-combustion engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Sept. 21, 1961 [Sept. 23, 1960], No. 33916/61. Heading F4U. [Also in Division F2] In combination with the cooling system of an I.C. engine, apparatus for regulating coolant circulation, comprises a main regulating and shut-off valve device operated by means responsive to the temperature of the coolant, which device regulates the relative distribution of coolant from an inlet 3 between two paths leading from it, one path 21 through the radiator and the other path 19 bypassing the radiator, and an auxiliary regulating and shut-off valve device by the manual operation of which the distribution of coolant between the two paths can be controlled, this auxiliary device, which is arranged in one path 19, being adapted, in one end position, to open the path 19 and, in another end position, to close the path 19, but to open a path through a passage 24 which discharges into the other path 21. As shown, the slidably mounted hollow cylindrical auxiliary valve member 7, operated by hand wheel 15, seats on one end of the similarly mounted hollow cylindrical main valve member 4 which has an open passage 6 in this end and co-operates at the other end with a fixed seat to control flow into the radiator path 21. The temperatureresponsive wax-containing capsule 9 operates the main valve through a movable plunger 17, a spring 10 loading the valve toward the fixed seat through links 12. In the event of failure of the main valve 4, the auxiliary valve 7 can push it on to the fixed seat, thereby shutting off flow through the main valve to the radiator. Thereafter, the auxiliary valve is operable to divide the flow through open passage 6 as required between the by-pass 19 through the co-operating seats 22, 23 on the respective valves, and the radiator passage 21 through the ported passage 24 controlled by the outer end of the auxiliary valve.
