Abstract

928,979. Valves. AMOT CONTROLS CORPORATION. April 11, 1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 14034/62. Class 135. A thermostatically operated diversion valve for use in the cooling system of an internal combustion engine comprises a housing 6 with three fluid passages 8, 9 and 10, a cylindrical valve member 41 reciprocable between two valve seats 36, 37, and bearing and sealing means for supporting the valve member and comprising an annular channel 43 to accommodate an 0-ring 47 of elastic material. When the engine is cold, the thermostat 53 holds the valve member 41 on the seat 36 so that all of the water from the water jacket flows from passage 8 through the centre of the valve member into the passage 9 which is connected to the inlet of the pump through a radiator by-pass loop. Increase in the temperature of the water leaving the jacket causes the valve member to move towards, and finally to abut, the seat 37 so that a progressively increasing proportion of the water flows into the passage 10 leading to the radiator. The thermostat is connected to a spider 66 on the valve member 41 by a rod 62, nut 63 and spring 74 to allow over-travel after the valve member has engaged the seat 37. A spring assembly 52 abutting a spider 68 connecting the thermostat to the seat 36 is connected to the rod 62 by straps 71 to bias the valve member to its upper position. The O- ring 47, which is resiliently distended around the valve member 41 but at the same time has a sliding fit thereon, moves between the upper and lower flanges of the channel 43 in operation. A vent 76 connects the passages 8 and 10.
