Abstract

1,032,386. Cooling internal combustion engines. MECANO-BUNDY G.m.b.H. Aug. 4, 1964 [Aug. 5, 1963], No. 31118/64. Heading F4U. [Also in Division F2] A thermostat valve, particularly for the cooling system of an internal-combustion engine, comprises an inlet 1 connected to the water jacket, a conduit 2, clamped to the inlet 1, which leads to the radiator, and a by-pass 16 which leads back to the water jacket. A casing 4 is filled with a temperature-sensitive material 4a<SP>1</SP> and volume changes of the latter produce displacement of a plunger 5 relative to the casing 4. This plunger acts on a bridge 3c clamped between inlet 1 and conduit 2. Water from a cold engine returns directly through the by-pass 1b, but as its temperature increases the casing 4 moves downwards against a spring 7 and carries the closure member 6 from its seat 3 to open the conduit 2. Continued expansion causes the end of the casing 4 to move into the passage 1b permitting a sealing ring 13 carried thereon to close the end of this passage. In modifications, the casing 4 has an integral end instead of a separate plate 11. The sealing ring 13 may be of square section.
