Abstract
1,043,066. Cooling systems for internal combustion engines. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 18, 1965 [March 30, 1964], No. 11467/65. Headings F4S and F4U. The sealed liquid cooling system of an internal combustion engine includes a chamber in or connected directly with the inlet tank with a resiliently extensible wall to allow for the increase in volume of the cooling liquid on temperature rise. As shown, the upper header tank 54 of the radiator is provided with a resiliently extensible wall 58 in contact with the coolant completely across the tank at the lowest anticipated temperature. The volume of the tank 54 is sufficient to accommodate the expansion at normal engine operating temperature. A pipe 59 connected to the tank below the wall 58 carries a combined filler cap and pressure relief valve 61. In a cross-flow radiator the expansion device is a separate chamber arranged at the highest point of the system with a resilient wall extending across it.
