Abstract
896,850. Cooling systems and radiators for internal combustion engines. LEYLAND MOTORS Ltd. Sept. 1, 1958 [June 1, 1957], No. 17465/57. Class 64(3) In an engine cooling system, particularly in vehicles in which the engine is placed beneath the floor of the vehicle, loss of coolant due to expansion is minimized by the provision of an overflow collector tank 7 connected by a flow channel, e.g. pipe 17 and passage 14 to the outward side of a partition 8 provided in the radiator filler cup 2, the partition embodying outwardly and inwardly opening valve members 12, 13 respectively. The overflow tank and filler cup may be entirely separate from the radiator 4 as shown or they may be incorporated in the radiator structure. In the system shown, expansion of engine coolant sufficient to fill the filler tube 1 and cup 2 up to the partition 8 will open the spring-loaded valve 12 and water will flow through 14 and 17 to the overflow tank 7 in which also steam will in part condense and in part escape through vent pipe 18. The radiator vent is connected to the filler cup 2 beneath the partition 8 through a pipe 15 and passage 16. If the pressure in the system falls on cooling to below atmosphere, the inlet valve 13 in the filler cup will open and coolant will be sucked back through 17 and 14 into the circulation system.
