Abstract
1,264,282. Cooling internal-combustion engines. MODINE MFG. CO. 10 Aug., 1970 [30 Dec., 1969], No. 38449/70. Headings F4S and F4U. Gases, e.g. air, entrained in the liquid coolant of an I.C. engine cooling system are separated therefrom by incorporating into the system a separating tank 22 which receives an induced flow of coolant from an air cooled radiator 14 having horizontal tubes 17 by means of an arrangement comprising a tube 29, Venturi tube aspirator 32 and U-tube 36. In operation, coolant supplied from the engine 10 through a line 33 to the Venturi 32 creates a suction to induce coolant flow through tube 29 which, as shown, is connected to the outlet header 16 of the radiator. Liquid coolant and entrained gas enters the tank 22 through the end 31 of U-tube 36. The separated gas is vented through cap 35 to atmosphere and gas-free liquid is returned to the inlet 12 of circulation pump 11 by way of return line 38. Coolant from the engine 10 is normally directed to the radiator inlet header 15 through a line 18 which has a thermostatie valve 20. The bottom of the outlet header 16 is connected by line 21 to the pump inlet 12. A common dividing wall 23 provided with an aperture 34 separates the tank 22 from the outlet header 16. A line 39 is provided to direct liquid coolant into the tank 22 when valve 20 is closed. In a modified embodiment (Fig. 2) the separating tank (22) is located adjacent the inlet header (115), a check valve (41) being provided in the gas-free liquid return line (138) to prevent afterboiling occurring. The gas-free liquid return line may be omitted (Fig. 3). In a further embodiment (Fig. 4) a second tank (42) which also serves for separating entrained gas from coolant is located adjacent the inlet header (15).
