Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a supercharged internalcombustion engine having separate cooling water circuits for the engine 1 and for a cooler 3 for the air supplied by a supercharger 2, a connection 12 between the two circuits is opened by a thermostat 13 when the temperature in the air cooler circuit falls below a predetermined value, to transfer warm water from the engine cooling circuit to the circuit of the air cooler 3. In Fig. 1, each circuit has its own supply pump 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>, radiator 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP> and expansion tank 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP>, and the pipe 12 is connected from the outlet 11 of the cylinder block to the inlet of the pump 4<SP>11</SP>, the thermostat 13 being responsive to the temperature of the water flowing towards the cooler 3. At a predetermined temperature just above freezing, the valve 13 opens to admit warm water to prevent the water in the cooler 3 from freezing. A return pipe 14 leads from the cooler outlet to the inlet of the engine coolant pump 4<SP>1</SP>. In a modification, Fig. 2, the return pipe 14 is omitted and the return is effected through the expansion tanks which are combined in a single tank 15 and separated by an overflow baffle 1611. When water is fed from one circuit to the other through pipe 12, the level in the right-hand expansion chamber rises until it reaches the top of baffle 1611 when it overflows into the left-hand expansion chamber connected to the engine cooling circuit through return pipe 14<SP>1</SP>.
