Abstract

1,153,655. Supercharged engines. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NœRNBERG A. G. June 1, 1967 [July 23, 1966], No.25445/67. Heading F1B. In a method of operating a supercharged I. C. engine provided with means for cooling the supercharging air the temperature of the latter is continuously varied in inverse proportion to the engine load and in dependence on the supercharging air pressure. The invention also includes a supercharged I. C. engine including a heat exchanger 3 incorporated in a coolant circuit which includes a mixer valve 8 responsive to the supercharging air pressure and also connected to a heating medium circuit. The supercharger coolant is discharged through conduit 5 into a mixture container which is additionally supplied with a coolant e. g. water through conduit 6. A regulator 17 controls valve 18 to limit the maximum and minimum permissible temperatures of the supercharging air at full engine load. A by-pass 19 is arranged around valve 18. The mixer valve 8 is arranged in the coolant circuit 7, 4 and controlled by a diaphragm valve 10 subjected to the supercharging air pressure communicated via conduit 9. Valve 10 can be set for summer or winter operable by adjustment of springs. Under high engine load coolant flows through conduit 7, valve 8, conduit 4 arid through the heat exchanger 3. At starting or low engine load the valve connections 13, 14 are connected to a heating medium circuit 11, supplied from a heat exchanger 12 forming part of the engine coolant circuit, and some of the heating medium is mixed with the coolant passing into conduit 4 thereby reducing the cooling in the heat exchanger 3. The engine coolant flows through a further heat exchanger 15 controlled by a temperature regulator 16a. Alternatively the heat exchangers 12, 15 may be replaced by a separate heat exchanger.
