Abstract

1355594 Turbo-charged IC engines FRANCE ARMED FORCES - MINISTER OF 6 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 31596/72 Heading F1B Liquid-cooled exhaust gas turbo-charged Diesel engine has a combustion chamber through which the exhaust gases pass before reaching the turbine, and a compressor which supplies the combustion air to the engine via a cooler connected in parallel with the engine cooling system and also supplies air to the combustion chamber, there being a by-pass pipe to lead the air around the cooler and distributing means controlling the entrance to the by-pass so that during starting and the initial period of running, at least part of the air delivered by the compressor passes through the by-pass pipe. The engine 2 is connected by pipes 1 and a pump 4 to a cooler 3 for the liquid coolant, the air cooler 11 being connected in parallel with the cooler 3. Exhaust gas from the engine is led by a pipe 9 to a combustion chamber 8, having a fuel supply nozzle 17 and then drives a turbine 5, which is mechanically connected to a compressor 6. Air from the compressor passes by pipes 12 and 12a to the engine via the cooler 11. Part of the air goes by pipe 12b to the combustion chamber 8. A valve 15 controls the entrance to a by-pass pipe 14 around the cooler 11 so that when the engine is started from cold, the air is not over-cooled by passing through the cooler. The valve 15 may be thermostatically controlled by the temperature of the liquid coolant. The valve 15 can be arranged to close completely, in which case the air not required by the engine passes in the reverse direction to normal through the cooler 11, thus raising the temperature of the coolant liquid, and then passes to the combustion chamber 8. A motor 16 drives the turbine 5 for starting.
