Abstract

537,483. Pumps. SCHENKER, W. Dec. 21, 1939, No. 32678. Convention date, March 18, [Class 7 (ii)] In an engine 1 having a super-charging compressor 10 driven by an exhaust gas turbine 8, when there is a deficiency in the supply of exhaust or the engine is not running, the energy for driving the compressor is produced by heating the exhaust gases supplied to the turbine or by supplying heated air, the heating of the gases and of the air being regulated automatically. As shown, the exhaust from the engine 1 passes to the turbine 8 through a chamber 24 which can be heated by heating medium in a pipe coil 17, or by the combustion of fuel injected through a nozzle 19 and ignited if necessary by an electric ignition coil 25. The supply of heating medium to the coil 17 or of fuel to the nozzle 19 is regulated by a cock 18 or 22 actuated by a governor 26 driven from the shaft 9 of the turbine 8, or by a device responsive to the speed of the engine 1, the pressure or temperature in the exhaust pipe 5, the chamber 24, or the passage 13, or the rate of air flow in the passage 13. A motor 27 may be provided from driving the compressor 10 at starting, and by opening a valve 30 in a byepass passage 29, air supplied directly from the compressor may be used to drive the turbine 8 until the output of the turbine is sufficient to supply the air needed by the engine when running idle. Additional air may also be supplied through a pipe 32 or 35 by a piston compressor 31 driven from the engine, or by a motor-driven compressor 34.
