Abstract

825,270. Dual-fuel engines; heating, cooling and pumping charge; regulating. NORDBERG MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 12, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1957], No. 4670/58. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6) A two-stroke or four-stroke opposedpiston engine 10 operable alternatively on a diesel cycle with diesel fuel only or on gaseous fuel with pilot fuel injection is supercharged at a pressure ratio of up to 3 : 1 by a compressor 12 the output of which is rendered, other than by a compressor inlet valve, appropriately less on gaseous fuel than on diesel operation, e.g. so as to reduce the air-fuel ratio of the combustible mixture in the cylinders from 30 : 1 to between 23 : 1 and 21 : 1. During gaseous fuel operationan engine fuel governor 30 opens mechanically, electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically a valve 36 shown as by-passing an exhaust turbine 16 driving the compressor 12, but which may pass part of the compressor delivery directly to atmosphere, to the turbine outlet or to the compressor inlet. Alternatively, the governor 30 may control turbine inlet guide vanes or the compressor may be one powered from the engine crankshaft via a drive of appropriately controllable ratio. A cooler or heater 22 has its inlet 54 or outlet 56 adjusted by a valve 50 actuated by a compressed-air motor 48 under the control of a temperature-responsive element 44 in the engine induction manifold 26 so as to maintain the charge air temperature substantially constant at 135‹F. at all times.
