Abstract

509,285. Turning - gear; starting. MASCHINENFABRlK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.-GES. Oct. 18, 1938, No. 30166. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1937. [Class 7 (v)] An engine starter, particularly for diesel aero-engines, comprises a combustion turbine 1 adapted during normal running to drive a supercharger 8 or other engine auxiliary and being normally driven by exhaust gases from the engine; for starting purposes, the turbine is driven by gases from a combustion chamber 11 and is placed in driving connection with the engine through the medium of gearing 2, 3 or a fly-wheel or an air compressor for supplying air under pressure to the engine to cause its initial rotation. As shown, a valve 10 enables the turbine 1 to be put in communication either with the chamber 11 or the engine exhaust pipe. The gear 3 is provided with a disengageable clutch and may be formed as a fly-wheel. During the starting period, the cooling water, lubricating oil or fuel for the engine may be heated in a jacket 13 on the turbine 1 and also in a jacket on the chamber 11.
