Abstract

606,270. Radial two - stroke engines. CASTELLINI, A. P., and ROBEY & CO., Ltd. July 30, 1945, No. 19452. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (v) and 7 (vi)] A radial multi-cylinder two-stroke internalcombustion engine, Fig. 3, having its inlet valves 5 in the pistons 6, has a supercharger 36 in constant communication with the crank-case through ducts 40 and ports 4, exhaust ports 80 which open to the rear of the engine, three equi-spaced shafts, two of which, 50 and 51, are shown, to drive the supercharger from an internal gear 35 on the exhaust valve cam 29 and starting devices for the engine and supercharger which are automatically disengaged when the engine is running. The supercharger starting gear, Fig. 6, comprises a motor, not shown, driving the shaft 57 and the bevel gear 58 which engages a further bevel gear 59 on the outer casing of a centrifugal clutch 46 which drives the supercharger through the gear 43, resiliently connected to the said clutch through coil springs 76. When the engine starts and the speed of the shaft 49 reaches a predetermined value, the shoes on the inner part of the clutch engage the outer part of the clutch and take over the driving of the supercharger, hence disengaging the starter gear 58. The engine starter gear is similar to the above except that the starter motor is geared to inner member of the clutch on the shaft 50. The cam tracks 28, 29 driven directly from the engine crankshaft operate the exhaust valves for the front and rear cylinder banks respectively through ball bearing rollers and push-rods 20 with ball- and-socket joint ends. Two or more exhaust ports may be connected to an exhaust manifold which leads directly to the rear of the engine. Specifications 568,753 and 568,784 are referred to.
