Abstract

714,619. Two-stroke engine. TEAGLE, W. T. Dec. 12, 1952 [Jan. 21, 1952], No. 1690/52. Class 7(2) In a two-stroke single-cylinder engine having the crank-shaft bearings 22, 23, Fig. 4, on one side of the cylinder axis and comprising a cylinder 1, Fig. 1, crankcase 3 and crankshaft bearing-housings 4, 5 cast as an integral unit, the vertcal cylinder wall is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed ports 10 of Which at least one is of a sufficient diameter to enable the gudgeon pin 19, Fig. 4, to be passed therethrough so that the piston and connecting rod can be assembled within the cylinder, at least one of the ports 10 being a piston-controlled inlet port whilst the other port is either used as an additional inlet or is blanked off, such as by a plate 33 after the piston and connecting rod have been assembled. The cylinder 1, Fig. 1, is formed with integral cooling fins 2, and the bearing housings 4, 5 are located at the extremity of a channel-like arm 6 by which the engine may be mounted. The ports 10 are provided below the fins 2 whilst at 90 degrees therefrom and somewhat higher in the cylinder is an exhaust port 11; a transfer passage is located diametrically opposite the exhaust port 11. The cylinder head is attached by bolts 14, Fig. 4, to the cylinder 1 which has a detachable liner 16. The crank pin 21a embodies a longitudinal lubricating passage 21b that is intersected by a groove 21c around the pin with a restriction 21d at one end, the circulation of petrol/oil mixture through these passages being maintained by centrifugal force; oil seals 24 are situated in the bearing housings and the outer end of the crankcase is closed by a cover 25. A pulley or gear wheel 26 is secured to the crankshaft 21 to enable the drive to be taken therefrom and the crankshaft 21 has a dynamo 27 and a cooling fan 28 mounted on its outer end, the air from the latter being directed over the fins 2 by an open duct 29 connected at one end to the bolts 14 and at the other to the outer bearing-housing 5.
