Abstract

561,921. Internal-combustion engines particularly for model aircraft &c. FRENCH, L. J. B. R. Dec. 11, 1942, No. 17648. [Class 7 (ii)] An internalcombustion engine, particularly a small engine for driving models of aircraft, boats or racing cars, has a crank-shaft 3 connected by gearing 24 to an output shaft 1 arranged parallel to the cylinder axis and constituting a rotary valve controlling inlet and exhaust of the cylinder.. The output shaft, which may either be integral as shown or in two sections connected by splines, is mounted in bearings carried by an extension 6 of a cylinder casting 2 having cooling fins 10. An airscrew 8 is mounted on a boss 26 pinned to the shaft 1 and an enlargement 4 has a port 9 serving as a rotary valve controlling a combined inlet and exhaust passage 5. If a twopart shaft 1 is employed, the valve portion may be quickly replaced when worn. The output shaft rotates at half-engine speed and has a depression 16 serving, through'a push-rod, to operate a contact breaker 14, Fig. 1. The cylinder or crank-case 17 has a flange 18 or lugs for securing the engine to a pressed metal or other mounting which preferably also carries fuel tank, ignition coil and condenser. The lower end of the crank-shaft is formed as a worm for lifting oil from a sump 22 to the big end and other parts. The engine may in some cases have more than one cylinder or it may be of two-stroke type.
