Abstract

1,006,303. Revolving cylinder engines; power plant. A. P. PEDRICK, and F. E. ROBBINS. April 2, 1964, No. 1899/64. Headings F1B and F1Q. [Also in Division B7] A rotary cylinder engine has a rotary sleeve valve 7, Fig. 1, rotating in the same direction as the rotary cylinder block 5. In the four stroke engine of Fig. 1 with inlet and exhaust passages 11, 12, the sleeve 7 rotates at half the speed of the block 5 and the pistons are connected to a stationary crankpin 1. In the four cylinder engine of Fig. 9, the cylinders are in two pairs at 180 degrees and are cooled by air driven through the rotating block by fan 27. The valve 7 is driven from an extension 22 of the cylinder block 5 by gears 23, 25, and the output shaft 21 is driven from the cylinder block by gears 19, 20. The air intake pipe 29 is fed with warm cooling air. Several ignition devices 36, Fig. 14a, may be provided and brought into action in succession as engine speed increases in order to vary the ignition advance. In a compression ignition engine the piston may be constructed as in Specification 981,436 and the stroke of the pistons altered as engine speed increases. In Fig. 24 two of the engines 60, 61 are arranged transversely in a motor vehicle with their output shafts driving the half shafts 64, 65 either separately or through a coupling 63. In Fig. 26 the pistons 3<SP>1</SP> act upon a stationary cam 7<SP>1</SP> towards which they are urged by a flexible band 66. Specifications 275,740, 469,883, 565,652, and 911,937 also are referred to.
