Abstract

1,147,047. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. POLITECHNIKA WARSZAWSKA. June 9, 1966 [June 9, 1965], No.25662/66. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I. C. engine comprises a plurality of rotary-pistons 3, Fig.1, separated by expanding sealing rollers 5 which include radial sealing strips 6 to form an articulated polygon which rotates in a stationary cylinder whose inner surface is constituted by a curve/equidistant in relation to the curve of motion of the vertices of the articulated polygon, or of the loci of the outer ends of equal extensions of the bisectrix of the angles between adjacent sides of the polygon and on each flank of the polygon a plurality of articulated rotor segments 8, Fig. 2, equal in number to the number of pistons 3 provided with rollers 10 at each axis of articulation which engage a camtrack having a contour equidistant in relation to the curve over which the vertices of the polygon are moving and with each axis of articulation aligned with a corresponding sealing roller axis. Each piston 3 is formed with a recess 4 which together with the inner surface of the cylinder form working chambers in which the phases of suction, compression, ignition, expansion and exhaust of a gaseous fuel-air mixture are carried out. The curve 1 is formed theoretically by one of a group of Lamme curves determined according to the formula: - which p is the function of the angle # of rotation of the radius-vector of the articulated polygon vertex. In practice, the curve may be an ellipse with a axis ratio <SP>a</SP>/ b within a range of 1À3 to 2À0, preferably having an axis ratio <SP>a</SP>/ b = 1À625. One of the rotor segments 8 on each rotor is formed with a bow 15 having a track 16 over which reciprocates the outer ring of a bearing 17, Fig. 5, fixed on a crank-pin 18 of a crank or flywheel 19, 42 to transmit torque to the engine output shaft 20. Cooling water is supplied through an opening 43 and flows through shaft openings 45, openings 46 in the flywheel 19 and a flexible conduit 48 to the inside of the pistons 3. It then returns through a flexible conduit 50, a bore 39 in the shaft 20 and an opening 51 to the cooler. The engine includes an inlet port 27, Fig. 3, connected to a carburetter and may include an inlet port 26 connected to atmosphere through which clean air is admitted to scavenge the engine, the port 26 being open simultaneously with an additional outlet port 29.
