Abstract
565,652. Rotating-cylinder engines; cooling. HARRIES, L. April 16, 1943, No. 6099. [Class 7 (ii)] A rotating-cylinder engine comprises an aluminium or other rotor 4 in two halves, bolted together and meeting in a plane at right angles to a fixed crank-shaft 15, the two halves together forming two or more radial cylinders with intervening spaces 37 forming jackets through which a cooling liquid, such as oil, is circulated. As shown, the rotor 4 is enclosed in a stationary casing in two parts 2, 11, bushed to receive shafts 5, 10 secured to the halves of the rotor, the part 11 having cooling fins. The crank-shaft 15 extends through the rotor shaft 10 and is locked by a plate 16 to the crankcase 25 carried by the casing part 11. Pistoncontrolled exhaust ports 3, 8 are adapted to register with an arcuate port 29 in the casing part 2, leading to an exhaust manifold 9. Inlet ports in the outer ends of the cylinders are supplied with air by a blower 17 driven through gearing 14, and fuel by a pump and an injector. Oil is circulated from a pump 19 through a pipe 7 and passages 6 to the jackets 37, and through a pipe 32 to the crank-shaft.
