Abstract

676,512. Exhaust gas turbine driven pumps. FRANCIS, E. L. M. (Inffeld, K.L.G.M. von). Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35241/47. Class 7(ii) [Also in Group XXVI] The volume of the 'connecting spaces between the exhaust ports of at the most two cylinders of an internal combustion engine and the point of smallest cross sectional area of a turbine nozzle or group of nozzles fed by the exhaust ports is smaller than the piston displacement of one of the cylinders and the turbine blading is cooled by means of circulating liquid. The volume of the connecting spaces may be less than half the piston displacement of one of the cylinders. Fig. 2 shows a plan of a twelve cylinder V-engine having arranged between its cylinders 1 three exhaust gas turbine driven superchargers 6. Air is drawn in at 12 by the two righthand superchargers and supplied to the inlet of the left-hand supercharger which delivers to a pipe 15 from which the air is conveyed to the cylinders. Fig. 3 shows a section through the exhaust gas turbine and one elbow 11 leading from the exhaust outlet of one of the cylinders to the turbine. The turbine is cooled by liquid supplied through an inlet pipe 16 which passes through passages 17, 18 to a cooling channel 19 in the turbine wheel. From the channel the liquid passes to an outlet 23 through passages 21, 22. The elbow 11 is cooled by liquid flowing through a space 25. This liquid passes to spaces 26 where itcools the nozzles 10 and then to a space 27 in which it cools the turbine housing. In a modification the superchargers could all be in series or all in parallel.
