Abstract

925,984. Gas turbine plant. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Sept. 19, 1961, No. 33466/61. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXVII] An exhaust gas turbo-supercharger is provided with means whereby the exhaust gases flow through a passageway of small area so as to create high velocity when the engine is operating at relatively low speeds, and through a passageway of larger area so creating a relatively lower velocity when the engine is operating at higher speeds. The unit shown comprises a turbine 14 and compressor 15 mounted on a common shaft, the turbine being driven by exhaust gases from engine manifold 23 which pass to the turbine inlet 17 and are directed on to the rotor blades by guide blades 25. The turbine inlet is divided into two portions by a partition 26 and the guide blades are also divided by a partition 27. At relatively low engine speeds the exhaust gases flow as indicated by full lines into the left-hand portion of the turbine inlet and through the left-hand portion of the inlet guide blades. At higher engine speeds, the valve 30 is opened and a portion of the exhaust gases then flows as indicated by broken lines into the chamber 29 and passes into the righthand portion of the turbine inlet and through the right-hand portion of the guide blades. The valve 30 is actuated by means of a piston 31 to which fluid under pressure is supplied through line 34. The operating fluid may be lubricating oil, the pressure of which is dependent upon engine speed. In a second embodiment, the exhaust gases flow directly from the inlet volute on to the rotor blades, no guide blades being provided. The inlet volute is divided by a partition as in the first embodiment.
