Abstract

Internal combustion engines with super-chargers driven by turbines utilising the exhaust gases are controlled so that the supercharging is adequate at low speed but not excessive at high speed. This can be achieved by installing a jet pump (E) in the exhaust duct (12) of the turbine (6) which drives the supercharger. The jet pump (E) is supplied with exhaust gas through a branch pipe (23), connected to the pipe (10) which connects the turbine (6) to the engine. An alternative arrangement supplies the jet pump (E) with air from the outlet of the supercharger. A further variation of the design employs a spring loaded relief valve in the pipe supplying air or gas to the jet pump (E).
