Abstract

An internal combustion engine (10) is supplied by a turbocharger (11) on a shaft (13) driven by an exhaust gas turbine. There is a flow meter (19) on the inlet of the turbocharger and there are pressure detectors (22, 23) on the inlet and discharge. The signals from all three detectors are fed into a comparator (18) which contains base data corresponding to the surge line of the turbocharger. The output of the comparator controls a solenoid valve (16) in a bypass (15) from the discharge to the inlet of the turbocharger. The valve is opened when the flow drops to the surge points to prevent surging occuring. The system responds more rapidly to a reopening of the throttle than a simple pressure relief valve on the discharge.
