Abstract
616,112. Admission and exhaust pipes; combustion product plant. RICARDO, H. R. Aug. 28, 1946, No. 25738. [Classes 7 (i) and 7 (ii)] In a multi-cylinder two-stroke internalcombustion engine, particularly for supplying exhaust gases to a turbine and having an exhaust manifold comprising a plurality of tubular sections each connected to a cylinder or to the cylinder block and joined to the adjacent tubular section on each of the adjacent tubular sections by a telescopic sliding joint, a scavenging air manifold structure is secured to the cylinders or cylinder block, enclosing the exhaust manifold, and serves to convey the scavenging and charging air to the inlet ports of the cylinders. Each exhaust manifold C is surrounded by an air space F which communicates with the inlet manifold E by means of openings G<1> in a partition G, which latter acts as a heat deflector and thereby reduces the heat transfer from the exhaust manifold C to the supercharging air in the inlet manifold E. Dilution of the exhaust gases may be effected by leakage of air, which is under higher pressure than the exhaust gases, from the space F either through the telescopic sliding joints in the exhaust manifold, or passages provided therein. This may be convenient when the exhaust gases are used to drive a turbine.
