Abstract

442,940. Exhaust systems. PETERSEN, O., 27, Bregentveds AllÚ, Gentofte, near Copenhagen. July 18, 1934, No. 20978. Drawings to Specification. [Class 7 (ii)] In a two-stroke engine, which is charged under pressure, scavenging and charging are improved by providing an exhaust system which has such characteristics, or natural frequency, that the periodic time of a complete oscillation of the exhaust gases therein is substantially the same as, or slightly less than, the time, in each cycle, during which the cylinder exhaust and inlet ports are open. This is effected by running the engine at a specific speed, or providing a telescopic exhaust pipe, which may open into a collecting chamber or direct to atmosphere. In a multicylinder engine the cylinders may have separate coequal exhaust pipes leading to a common collecting chamber, or the cylinders may be connected by short pipes to manifolds in groups selected so that the exhaust periods do not overlap. Pressure diagrams and specific dimensions for a six cylinder engine are given.
