Abstract
The cylinders of a two-stroke supercharged engine are arranged in groups of not more than three cylinders the timing cycles of which are spaced apart by at least 90 degrees, the cylinders of each group being connected to a separate exhaust gas receiver which is connected to the turbine of a supercharger. In the eight-cylinder engine of Fig. 1, cylinders 1 ... 3 and 7 ... 8 are connected to receivers 23, 25, and cylinders 4 and 5 to a receiver 24. Receiver 23 has an outlet 29 to a turbine 28 and outlet pipes 30, 31 of the receivers 24, 25, pass through the receiver 23 and discharge into the outlet 29. The pipes 30, 31, are of semicircular cross-section. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the end receivers (46), (48), are connected to separate turbines (41), (43), and the middle receiver 47 discharges into both turbines. Arrangements are shown for engines with 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 cylinders. In the 5 and 7 cylinder engines the cylinders are arranged in two groups of 2 or 3 cylinders, Fig. 8, and the middle cylinder discharges into both receivers.
