Abstract

779,503. Exhaust piping; cooling exhaust. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURGNURNBERG AKT.-GES. Jan. 3, 1955 [Feb. 13, 1954], No. 85/55. Class 7 (2). Exhaust .piping for multicylinder engines having one or more in-line cylinder banks, more particularly such engines having exhaust gas turboblower supercharging, and of the kind in which the exhaust gases from individual cylinders or cylinder groups are discharged separately, is constructed from a plurality of constructional elements 2, Fig. 1, which are arranged sequentially and are of a length substantially equal to the distance between the axes of successive cylinders of the or each bank, each element 2 consisting of a tubular shell 5 having gas channel segments defined by partly helical internal partitions 6 and intercommunicating with like segments of the other elements 2 to form gas channels each of which has a connection or connections 7 to an engine cylinder or cylinders. As shown applied to an eight-cylinder V-engine, the elements 2 have partitions 6 defining four gas channels each having connections 7 from two cylinders which fire at intervals as separated as possible. The piping is closed by a cover 22 at one end and connected at the other end via a water-cooled guide ring 21 to an exhaust gas turbine. The members 5, 6, 7 are integral and of heat-resistant cast steel. The elements 2 have heat-insulating and water-cooling jackets 11, 12, Fig. 2, respectively, the latter being flanged for bolting-up of the elements and each having two water inlets, such as 15, a water outlet 16 and a drain 17, and being of welded-up construction. The tubular shells 5 are free to expand axially by interconnection via sliding spigot and socket joints incorporating sealing means between the gas channels in the form of slots 10, Fig. 5, in each spigot engaging vanes projecting from a ring 8 secured in the corresponding socket.
