Abstract
1329167 I.C. engine exhaust pipes OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 5 July 1971 [13 July 1970] 31382/71 Heading F1B Two-stroke outboard motor engine has more than two cylinders, each cylinder having an exhaust port, and a lower unit consisting of a drive shaft housing which supports the engine block and a port which is connected to the housing, extends into the water under normal operating conditions and supports a propeller; an exhaust pipe has one end located adjacent the top of the housing and extends into the housing and an exhaust passageway system positioned between the exhaust ports and the housing has an outlet communicating with the exhaust pipe and respective passageways communicating with each exhaust port, the passageways being of equal acoustical flow length so that the compressive wave occuring at the opening of the exhaust port of a cylinder which has just fired arrives at the exhaust port of the next cylinder to fire, just prior to the closing of the exhaust port of that cylinder, thus decreasing the amount of combustible charge lost through the port. A four cylinder two-stroke V-engine has the cylinders arranged in two pairs with the cylinders of each pair one above the other and their axes in a common plane, the angle between the planes being 90 degrees. The exhaust gas passageway system 73 is attached to the engine block and conducts the exhaust gas from the ports 39, (41) 43 and (47) to the exhaust pipe 77. The length of the exhaust gas ducts is such that the acoustical flow distance between the exhaust gas port of a cylinder which has just fired and the exhaust gas port of the cylinder which will be charged next causes the compressive wave emerging from the previously fired cylinder to arrive at the exhaust port of the next cylinder to be charged shortly in advance of the closing of the exhaust port of that cylinder, which will thus be subject to a pressure increase. The effect occurs when the engine is operating at normal temperature and in the high speed range. The system is also designed so that the outgoing compressive wave will generate a returning rarefaction wave which arrives at the generating cylinder when the piston is at bottom dead centre to increase scavenging. Modified forms of the exhaust gas passageway system are shown which are suitable for 3-cylinder in-line engines and 6-cylinder inline or V-engines.
