Abstract

1327626 Turbo-charged I.C. engines MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AG 29 Oct 1970 [8 Nov 1969] 51561/70 Heading F1B The engine exhaust gas collector 7 is partitioned into two or more chambers 9, 10 and each chamber is connected to at least two cylinders having their exhaust periods sufficiently spaced to substantially prevent interference with cylinder scavenging. The volumes of the chambers 9, 10 are proportional to the gas flow therethrough and the outlets F11, F12 of the chambers merge into at least one turbine inlet 12 which is common to at least two adjacent chambers. The cross-sectional areas of the outlets F11, F12 are proportional to the respective chamber volumes. A nine or seven cylinder engine, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) may have three side-by-side chambers connected to two turbines, the centre chamber being connected to both turbines. The outlets of the three side-by-side chambers may be connected to two side-by-side chambers (66, 67), Fig. 6 (not shown), having outlets connected to a turbine inlet (70). A nine or twelve cylinder engine, Figs.4 and 5 (not shown), may have three or four exhaust chambers connected through respective outlets to a common turbine inlet (60 or 66') two chambers being arranged side-by-side with the third or third and fourth chambers beside and parallel to the first two. The chambered collector may be associated with V or H arranged engine cylinders.
