Abstract
1,020,274. Rotary-piston I.C. engines. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G. and WANKEL G.m.b.H. July 13, 1964 [July 13, 1963], No. 28934/64. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. engine of the trochoidal n and n+ 1 lobe type comprises exhaust and inlets ports 12, 13 situated in a cylinder 1 and/or side walls 3, 4 (Fig. 4, not shown) of the engine housing above and below the minor axis 10 of the inner peripheral-surface 2 of the cylinder, respectively each of a pair of ducts 14, 15 associated with said ports being smoothly arcuate in configuration and substantially tangential to a circle (not shown) which is centred on the axis of rotation of a power-output shaft 7 and passes through the centre of the working chamber adjacent the corresponding port, so that flow resistance is minimised. Said ducts may cross-over one another within a heat-exchanging chamber 14 (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), for pre-heating the fuelair mixture in duct 14. Alternatively, the engine may comprise a secondary intake port 19 for light-load working and an associated duct 20 which passes through a heat-exchanging chamber 21, whereas duct 14 by-passes said chamber. The piston 5 may be supplied with cooling oil through shaft 7, a duct 23 being provided in one of the side walls of the housing for returning the oil to a reservoir 25.
